Three Days Peloponnese Tour (Ancient Corinthos, Argolida, Sparti & Mystras, Ancient Olympia)

Day 1 :
Our tour starts with the visit of Canal of Corinthos (Isthmus) which connects the Saronic & Corinthian Gulfs & separate Peloponnese from the rest Greek mainland. After spending a little time in the Canal (taking photos, etc), we proceed with the archaeological area of Ancient Corinthos where, amongst others, you will see the Temple of Apollo (one of the earliest Doric temples in Greece), the Peirene Fountain, the Glauke Fountain, the famous Bema of St. Paul & you will visit the Archaeological Museum with finds from the pre-historic period. We continue with the visit of Mycenae, the Kingdom of mythical Agamemnon. In this fortified Acropolis & the surroundings funerary sites you will see important monuments such as the Great Cyclopean Walls, the magnificent Lions’ Gate, the impressive Treasure of Atreus (Tomb of Agamemnon), the Grave Circle B’ & you will also visit the archaeological museum with areas’ finds.

 

We proceed with the last visit of the day to the romantic city of Nafplio, which became the first capital of the Greek state in 1827 after the Greek revolution against Ottomans. You will discover the medieval old town with the narrow cobblestone alleys & the neoclassical historic buildings. You will visit the Palamidi Castle (climbing its 999 steps) in Acronafplia & you will finally enjoy your dinner in a Greek traditional tavern by the sea while attending the marvelous Bourtzi, a small Venetian fortress located in the Agioi Theodoroi small rocky island. You will finally spend the night in one of the families run hotels in the town.

 

Day 2 :
The day starts with the visit of Ancient Epidaurus. You will explore the Sanctuary of Asklepios, you will see the famous ancient Theatre with its unique acoustic & you will visit the Archaeological Museum with finds from the sanctuary. We continue driving until reaching the city of Sparti, a famous city-state in ancient times & the capital of Lakonia. You will visit the archaeological area (with ruins of the Tomp of King Leonidas, of the ancient Theater & of the Temple of Artemis), the archaeological museum & the olive museum.

 

We continue our day with the visit to the famous Mystras (an Unesco’s protected site). In this medieval fortified castle, located in the top of a hill, you will find palace premises of the Mystras Despots, the Cathedral of St. Demetrios, many churches & monasteries. You will conclude your stay there with the visit to the archaeological museum with finds from the area. Our second day ends with driving to Ancient Olympia. You will enjoy your dinner & you will spend the night in one of the families run hotels in the town.

Day 3 :
The day starts with the visit of the Archaeological Area of Ancient Olympia where, on 776 B.C., the Olympic Games took place in honor of Zeus & instituted the sacred ekecheiria. The area includes the impressive sanctuary (dedicated to Zeus) & many ancient athletic premises. You will discover the Temple of Zeus, the Temple of Hera, the Ancient Stadium, the Ancient Gymnasium, the Prytaneion, the Bouleuterion (Council House), the Palaestra & many other important monuments. Lastly you will visit the Archaeological Museum with the permanent exhibition of the twelve galleries full of important finds from the area (Hermes of Praxiteles, Statue of Nike by Paionios, the sculpted decoration of the Temple of Zeus, etc). After having lunch in a Greek traditional taverna in the town and after paying a visit to a local winery (taste greek wines), our three days adventure comes to an end with the return driving to Athens.

We continue our driving & after a scenic route, we reach Kalamata (stop for lunch & some rest while walking around). Our day ends with driving to Ancient Olympia. You will enjoy your dinner & you will spend the night in one of the families run hotels in the town.
